How to run a thanksgiving potluck sign-up
Thanksgiving dinner has a set menu, and a potluck version only works if every classic dish has exactly one cook. This template lists the traditional sides and pies with a single spot each, plus a few that can take two (rolls, pies, drinks) and a cleanup crew so the host isn't washing dishes alone. Friends sign up with a first name and an optional note like "dairy-free" or "bringing 2 dozen". Everyone sees what's already claimed before they shop.
- Set the date and dinner time in the note, and say what the host is cooking so nobody brings a second turkey.
- Remove any dishes your family skips and add the ones they don't (tamales, pierogi, collard greens).
- Create the sheet and send the link to the group chat about two weeks ahead.
- Check the organizer link a few days before and nudge anyone in the chat for the slots that are still open.
Tips
- Keep pies at two spots: they disappear first.
- A "Cleanup crew" slot gets volunteers who would rather not cook.
- Ask people to note if their dish needs oven time, so the host can plan the oven.
- The sheet deletes itself 30 days after Thanksgiving, so there is nothing to clean up afterwards.
